Root Canals Q & A

What are root canals?

Root canals are a dental treatment designed to save your tooth even after it’s become infected. The interior of your tooth consists of pulp that’s a blend of nerves and tissue. If decay or damage to your tooth allows an infection to reach this pulp, it causes problems for your oral health.

First, the infection can spread, destroying your tooth and even affecting your jawbone. Secondly, it’s often painful. The nerves in your tooth are sensitive and the infection causes pain.

Pacific Coast Smiles offers root canals to stop your pain and save your tooth. With this treatment, they have the opportunity to fully remove the infection from your tooth while supporting your tooth’s structural integrity.

What happens during a root canal?

Before your root canal, your Pacific Coast Smiles provider thoroughly numbs the area. You should feel no pain during your procedure.

Once you’re numb, your provider goes to work removing the infected tissue in your tooth. They then thoroughly clean the area and seal it. The team at Pacific Coast Smiles specializes in endodontics, or the treatment of your dental pulp. They use a specialized endo microscope during your root canal. This allows them to precisely remove all of the infection while protecting the healthy portions of your tooth. The result is a more successful, less invasive root canal.

Will I need a crown after my root canal?

In most cases, a fairly significant portion of your tooth has to be removed to fully clear away the infection. Pacific Coast Smiles then recommends a crown. The crown is a cap affixed over the top of your tooth. Your crown is created to look just like a natural tooth and align seamlessly with your surrounding teeth. It protects the tooth that received the root canal and gives you a sturdy chewing surface.

Your Pacific Coast Smiles provider takes a mold of your tooth after your root canal. They then fit you with a temporary crown to wear as your permanent crown is created to fit precisely over your tooth and colored to blend seamlessly with your smile. Once your crown is ready, you return to Pacific Coast Smiles so it can be bonded it in place, giving you a fully restored tooth.

If you need a root canal and want to receive it from an endodontic specialist, call Pacific Coast Smiles or make your appointment online today.
